Kaikaifilu was a large (the known specimen is averaged over 33 feet in length) Tylosaurine Mosasaurid from the end of the Cretaceous; discovered in the Lopez de Bertodano Formation; James Ross Island, Antarctica. The generic name of the animal is a reference to "Coi Coi-Vilu": an ocean serpent of Mapuche Legend known as the God of Water. It is unique among many Mosasaurs in having heterodont (differing in shape) teeth. The functionality of heterodont teeth in the circumstance of this carnivore is still unknown. Like other mosasaurs however, Kaikaifilu was a powerful and agile ocean-cruising predatory reptile; the apex predators of the late Cretaceous oceans.
